During our July and August Sunday morning worship gatherings, I will be preaching through selected Psalms, using that section of the Bible in order to help us connect in deeper ways to God. During that time, I will be using the NewLife blog as a platform for the people of our church the opportunity to share about particular songs that help them connect to God.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1)

Sometimes, just the right words come at just the right time, in just the fit way, to penetrate through a heart hardened with self-doubt and stubbornness, enough to spark action, like light piercing the darkness. In those times one thing is clear: no matter how the message was delivered, the source was our Heavenly Father. All of the different and unique ways that the Almighty Father communicates with little old us will never cease to amaze.

A few years ago I felt doomed by bad habits that I acquired through my childhood. I was at a point where I had already accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and put Him as my number one in life, but was feeling like my walk with Him was like climbing a ladder. Every time I would reach a certain point on the ladder, I would fall off and have to start all over again. Then came just the right words, at just the right time, delivered in just the right way, to revive and strengthen my heart. I listened to a song called “I will be Light” by Matisyahu, and was literally freed from the feeling of being doomed by the bad habits that were often keeping me from communion with the Father. Not to say that I’ve been perfect since hearing the song, far from it, but I have been dedicated to being light with the knowledge that I’m not doomed to sin but saved by grace and strengthened by the Spirit of our Father.

“… If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)

Matisyahu – I Will be Light

Sit back and in these days, remember my ways

Oh, will I get out of my cage?

Yes, I am a slave, searching for some freedom, searching for some freedom

So I intend to sing them, songs to spark memories

What is a man with no history?

Where am I? Who am I? What is this place? We’re just spinning in space

I will be light

Time will continue without you

So in the end it’s not about you, but what did you do?

Who do you love besides you, beside you?
Many died in the name of vanity, many die in their mind’s eye for justice

We died for you and still do

So I say to you this is nothing new

I will be light

One tiny moment in time for life to shine, to shine

Burn away the darkness

You’ve got one tiny moment in time for life to shine, to shine

To burn away the darkness

I will be light
